Monken Hadley CE School has a close relationship with its parish church, St Mary the Virgin in the Diocese of London. The present church dates back to the fifteenth century, not long after the Battle of Barnet. Over the centuries, modifications to the church have been made to ensure that the building was fit for purpose while preserving its medieval beauty and charm.
Rector Thomas is a regular visitor to the school, and is the effective school chaplain. The children visit the church for assorted lessons during the year and for school church services on significant dates in the church calendar such as Harvest, Christmas, Epiphany, Ash Wednesday etc.
Further details about the work of the church can be found on its website: www.stmarymh.co.uk
Monken Hadley CE School is fortunate in having an energetic PTA (The Friends) which does a fantastic amount of work to support the school through its fundraising and practical help with school activities. Fundraising is mainly done through popular events like the Hog Roast and Bonfire Night; the Christmas and Summer Fayres; Monken Hadley’s Got Talent; Children’s Discos; the Quiz Night and many more. The school has benefitted enormously from the Friends raising funds for a wealth of resources in the school: iPads, instruments, the library, playground equipment etc.
Class reps support the work of the Chairperson (Velia Carruthers) and the Secretary (Caroline Scott) and Treasurer (Diane Ross & Vivien Cheah) through liaising with parents/carers about upcoming events and fundraising. The Friends also helps to support the running of events that the school puts on where an extra pair of hands is helpful, whether it’s putting up bunting for ‘Music for a Summer’s Evening’ or running an arts and crafts workshop for all the children during Book Week.
